I Am Looking to Buy a New Kayak. Can You Help?

I currently have a perception prodigy 10ft. (here it is http://www.rei.com/product/798966). I bought it a couple of years ago and have enjoyed it. It was a good beginner boat but now I’m no beginner. I live near the Atlantic coast and have many salt water rivers, creeks, and of course the ocean. I also paddle some of the bigger and smaller freshwater rivers nearby. I am not sure what I should get for my next boat. I appreciate any ideas.

I suggest that you can’t really have one boat to do both rivers and the open ocean, if you want to progress. You need a sea kayak for the ocean, somewhere between 16 and 18 feet, and a creek boat for rivers, 6 to 10 feet. Which do you want to do most? Or maybe you are rich and can afford both!

You are absolutely right, about the 10′ boat being a good “beginner’s” kayak. If you are interested in stepping up to a good kayak for the rivers & creeks, but is also capable of some bigger water, I’d recommend the 21st Century Kayaks Alpha Centauri 14. It is a kit kayak that is so easy to assemble, you can build it in as little as a week. It has ballistic nylon “skin” that can stand up to the oysters & barnacles that would damage an expensive fibreglass or kevlar kayak, plus, the kit costs WAY less than a kevlar kayak. They are coming out with longer models very soon too.
